DRUNK DRIVERS IN MARYLAND COULD FACE PUNITIVE DAMAGESThere are many different penalties and consequences that can result from causing a Maryland car accident. If officials believe that you were under the influence of drugs or alcohol during a crash, you could face a huge increase in your insurance premium. In addition, heavy fines, a license suspension, and even incarceration are possibilities. A new measure introduced in Annapolis could make driving while under the influence even more costly.

According to a CBS Baltimore news report, a new measure being considered by Maryland lawmakers would force certain drunk drivers to pay restitution to their victims. If the bill becomes a law, drunk drivers who cause injury or death could have to pay punitive damages in addition to their fines, jail time, and other penalties. These punitive damages will not, however, apply to every drunk driving case.

This measure is specifically designed to punish repeat offenders and individuals who consumed a significant amount of alcohol. Only drivers who have a blood alcohol level of twice the legal limit and those who have a suspended or revoked license will face punitive damages. It also could apply to drivers who have a conviction, plea or sentence of probation within the last five years.
