According to Elizabeth Campbell, Charles County Emergency Services spokesperson, on the morning of March 7, a propane tanker truck overturned prompting the closure of Bensville Road from Carrie Court to Zoll Lane.
Courtesy of SoMdNews.com, the propane tanker can hold up to 2,000 pounds. It was 85 percent filled at the time of the single-vehicle accident, which left it on its side and leaking. The truck was sealed immediately by closing all the valves.
Neighborhoods Forced to Evacuate
The following neighborhoods were forced to be evacuated according to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office:
- Carrie Court
- Sedgeland Court
- Valley Drive
- Shannon Drive
- Paperbirch Court
- Poplar Drive
Several Charles County Schools Affected
Campbell stated that cleanup took several hours due to the crash’s nature. The Charles County Public School System kept prekindergarten children who were from affected areas at William A. Diggs Elementary. Students who lived in affected areas were not picked up for the afternoon session. Students who were from areas affected by the cleanup attended Theodore G. Davis Middle School, North Point High School, William Diggs Elementary School, and Henson Middle School were kept on school campuses until parents could pick them up. In addition, some students who attend Archbishop Neale School in La Plata were affected. Parents were contacted and told to pick up their students upon dismissal.
