The driver of a car that struck a school bus died Friday morning, March 15, 2013. According to police and school officials, none of the children on the bus were injured. The driver of the bus was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
According to somdnews.com, nine students from Great Mills High School were being transported to Leonardtown to the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center when the crash occurred. After visiting the scene of the school bus accident, Superintendent Michael Martirano said that the car crashed into the side of the bus just after 8:00 a.m.
The car that hit the school bus was traveling south on Route 5 at a high rate of speed when it ran into a ditch on the shoulder of the southbound lane near Whirlwind Road. The sedan then traveled back across the highway hitting the approaching school bus in its side. The driver was thrown from the car upon impact. Later at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital, the driver was pronounced dead from injuries received upon being ejected from the vehicle.
A deputy who worked the scene told the schools superintendent that some of the students got off the bus after the crash and used the bus first aid kit to try to assist the sedan’s injured driver. He said what those students had to witness was horrific.
On Friday morning, Route 5 between Whirlwind Road and Chingville Road was closed to traffic for several hours while an accident reconstruction crew worked the scene.
