Is There Life After DUI?

Get a Free Consultation

One of the biggest questions you may ask when you are charged with DUI is, “Is there life after DUI? If so, what will my life be like now?” A DUI charge is a big deal. A conviction is a bigger deal. While there is life after DUI, the process is difficult. As we have discussed in recent blog posts, DUI does not discriminate…no matter who you are.

Olympian Michael Phelps just recently crossed into the Life After DUI realm when he completed his probation that resulted from his 2014 arrest for driving under the influence in Maryland. As of late June, a Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services spokesman gave confirmation that Phelps, an Olympic swimmer, had completed 18 months of supervised probation.

In December 2014, Phelps pleaded guilty to the DUI charge in Baltimore District Court.  He received a one-year suspended sentence, as this was his second arrest for drunk driving.  Phelps states that he has not had any alcohol since entering an inpatient treatment program for 45 days the weekend after he was arrested.  He became a father for the first time in May of this year and is competing in three individual events in what would be his fifth Olympics appearance.

A single drunk driving arrest is serious and a conviction is even more serious. Having a second conviction – well, you get the picture. It not only affects you, but it also affects others in your life. This can be a burden for a long period of time, in this case, 18 months.
